Clean, fresh and ripe flavours are what you need to go for – something with a hint of orange or gooseberries, crushed strawberry or pineapple. When serving fish it’s always a safe bet to go for a wine that leans towards a fruity or green flavour on the palate spectrum – think an elegant Rose or a well balanced Chardonnay.

Our choice: Fleur du Cap Chardonnay, which has a subtle hint of vanilla and pairs brilliantly with seafood, or sublime Dunstone Shiraz Rose which, with its refreshing and fruity taste, is best served slightly chilled on a warm evening.

The Truth about Red Wine and Sex

There is a very distinctive physiological difference between men and women and it’s been confounding males for millennia, but I’m about to reveal it to you. A woman’s perception of her environment is based on what she feels – whereas a man’s is based on what he knows. As with anything, there are momentary exceptions to this rule but a fact remains a fact and understanding this will help men everywhere succeed in keeping their partners happy.

Viljoensdrift – River Grandeur Cape Blend 2009

This wine scored four and a half stars in Wine Magazine’s rating. It also earned a double gold at Veritas and a gold medal in the Michelangelo Competition. I have no idea how this wine won all these accolades as I really didn’t enjoy it. I opened it on a Sunday night and had a glass with some of my homemade Spaghetti Bolognaise and at first I thought that maybe my palate was off and I was being a little too fussy. If I am drinking a wine with 4 ½ Wine Magazine stars on the label I want to have the next glass and the next and the next but not this time round.

Tokara DeliCATessen

It’s always refreshing to discover a little gem tucked away on the Helshoogte pass. If you need a landmark, Tokara is next door Thelema and across from Clouds Estate.

The actual Tokara Delicatessen isn’t at the same spot as the tasting room and main restaurant but if you drive a few  hundred meters past the main Tokara winery entrance you will see it on your left. The Deli is pretty damn awesome and I couldn’t believe the laid-back atmosphere it offered. If you have been to Bramon Wine farm in Plettenberg Bay where you dine on tapas in the vineyards then Tokara Deli is an indoor version. It offers a chilled out yet buzzy atmosphere and the tapas and  rustic buffet (salads, pies and roasts) were delicious. Our meal (2 of us) plus a glass of wine and coffees came to 150 bucks – pretty reasonable if you ask me.
